Estrès, els Cossos i les Coses

(Stress, Bodies and Things)

ENGLISH

The waters of the Han River run through the images of the video from its opening scenes. They merge with an overflowing frenzy surrounding planned obsolescence, compulsive consumption, and the body itself as yet another object on which to speculate. A landscape of unease is created through social networks and the consumerist maelstrom that confronts us. In the end, the imposing Mapo Bridge, beneath which the Han River flows, fixes in the retina a space shaped by human despair: the place where many South Koreans overwhelmed by consumerism decide to take their own lives.
This landscape in South Korea constitutes a biopolitical landscape, one that defines and is, in turn, defined by the contemporary subject. The subjectivity of human agency over geography manifests itself as a space of imagination, a zone for the expansion of the self and its desires and longings, but also, as in this case, of its obsessions and fears.
