(The Alfou Co-educational Schools: an interrupted Project)
ENGLISH
The Alfou Co-educational Schools were conceived in keeping with the aims of the Republican schools established during the Second Spanish Republic in the 1930s. Construction was left unfinished in 1938 due to the Spanish Civil War. The school is located in an agricultural area between the municipalities of Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, Llinars del Vallès, and Cardedeu. Its purpose was to provide a school where the children of farming families could attend regularly, something that was uncommon because of the distances involved, adverse weather conditions, and agricultural work.
The artistic project The Alfou Co-educational Schools: An Interrupted Project (2023) seeks to make visible what could not come to be through a scale model showing what the school might have looked like, a video document exploring the geographical area the school would have served, with walks -or drifts- through the farmhouses and areas that were later urbanised, and video interviews with the descendants of those who would have been its pupils.
The project also examines the current situation of the Alfouarea, now fragmented by three residential developments resulting from the urban speculation of the 1960s and 1970s, and generates speculative micro-narratives about the future of this territory.
On the date of the simulated inauguration, 14 April 2023, a commemorative plaque identifying the site and providing a brief explanation was installed. A series of small-scale actions also took place, including a gathering of the descendants of the hypothetical pupils and staged performance of short narratives by the theatre group 10 de Deu Teatre from Cardedeu. Enric Maurí presented the audiovisual works, a performance, and the scale model of the school.
This action calls for the preservation of the remains of the school, now abandoned, and asserts the right to reclaim the spaces of historical memory belonging to a community that has been divided and stripped of its identity.
