Aigua!
(Water!)

ENGLISH

The audiovisual installation Aigua! (Water!) is based on three moments that have left a lasting mark on the artist’s life. The first is the brutal shelling of a queue of people waiting to collect water from a public fountain during the Siege of Sarajevo in 1994. The second took place in 2001 and involved a group of people from Central Africa who, after arriving via the Canary Islands, camped in Plaça Catalunya in Barcelona and were interviewed by a reporter, who asked whether the risks thay had taken had been worthwhile. One of the young men pointed towards the fountain and replied that here he had water only twenty meters away, whereas back home he had to walk for four hours to obtain it. The third significant moment occurred in 2008, during the most severe drought in eighty years, a crisis that has recurred ever since as a consequence of climate change and that may become irreversible unless effective action is taken.
The performance and video installation bring together these episodes and connect them with each individual’s memories. In this context, plastic bottles serve as the common thread. In the performance, the artist drags a number of bottles tied together with a length of string in order to connect the concept of the circular economy and the excessive production of waste with the economy of water, thereby underscoring water’s value as a shared eco-social heritage.
