Ombres i Clarianes
(Shadows and Clearings)
ENGLISH
The art installation Ombres i Clarianes (Shadows and Clearings) was presented as a part of the 2024 Panoràmic Festival, whose central theme was social, political, and cultural polarization. The project is based on the idea that polarization is a defining symptom of contemporary societies, linked to the concentration of power in large corporations and the declining influence of nation- states. This has led to an increasingly fragmented public sphere, making consensus more difficult and fostering populist and authoritarian rhetorics, as well as, in extreme cases, violent conflicts.
Within this context, Maurí’s project offers a critical, chronological reading of the landscape through the archives of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya, combining historical materials with the artist’s own work. Maurí had previously explored the degradation of the landscape in projects such as Instal·lacions Furtives (Clandestine Installations) and La caseta i l’hortet (The little house and kitchen garden), in which he examines environmental pollution, urban speculation, and the transformation of natural environments such as the Montseny massif.
In Ombres i Clarianes, these contemporary images are brought into dialogue with historical photographs that originally presented an idealized vision of nature. The project demonstrates how this idealization, together with the rise of social media, has contributed to the massification of tourism and the degradation of natural landscapes. In that sense, the viral circulation of images portraying ‘idyllic’ landscapes can ultimately accelerate their destruction: The greater the popularity of a place, the more visitors it attracts, resulting in increased environmental pressure through waste, infrastructure development and ecological impact.
Overall, the project considers the relationship between images, nature and society, and reveals how contemporary visual culture can both transform and degrade the landscape.
