La Pedra Filosofal

(The Philosopher’s Stone)

ENGLISH

Created during an international research residency at CACiS -Centre for Contemporary Art and Sustainability, Calders, Catalonia- La pedra filosofal (The Philosopher’s Stone)(2021), by Nathalie Rey and Enric Maurí, is a video installation that explores transformation, artifice, and the blurred boundaries between nature and consumption. The project comprises a metal supermarket shelf displaying boxes of profiteroles made from stones wrapped in melted plastic, together with a 14-minute single-channel video.
The film reinterprets motifs from Peau d’Âne (1970), directed by Jacques Demy, as well as the 1904 silent adaptation of Charles Perrault’s fairy tale. It tells the story of a clumsy fairy, wearing a blonde wig in the style of Catherine Deneuve, who attempts to prepare a dessert endowed with magical powers. As the narrative unfolds, identities and realities gradually become blurred until the fairy’s culinary experiment descends into absurdity. In the end, she turns to industrially produced pastries, devouring them in search of pleasure.
By merging alchemical symbolism with the everyday imagery of consumer culture, La pedra filosofal critiques the food industry’s manipulation of taste, quality and desire. The handmade and the industrial, the edible and the toxic coexist in a grotesque parody of contemporary abundance. Drawing on the ancient connection between art and magic, the work transforms the ‘stone’ into a metonym for unspoiled nature and the profiteroles into a symbol of artifice. As the two merge, the boundary between the natural and the synthetic dissolves, evoking the modern alchemist in the pursuit of eternal happiness and the ever-elusive promise of immortality.
The short film was selected for the 2021 edition of the Panoràmic Festival (Barcelona), dedicated to film, photography, and new media.
