Atlantis
ENGLISH
Atlantis is a project created during the COVID-19 pandemic as an artistic and critical reflection on the social, economic, political, and environmental transformations brought about by lockdown.
The artists Nathalie Rey and Enric Maurí observed how, during this period, cities were emptied and nature reclaimed urban spaces, highlighting the negative impact of human activity on the planet. This exceptional situation led them to question the way we inhabit the world and the contradictions of the prevailing system.
The project draws on the myth of Atlantis -a powerful civilisation that was ultimately destroyed- to propose the opposite idea: the possibility of rebuilding society on more ethical and sustainable values in the aftermath of the crisis. It is also informed by the work of thinkers such as Hito Steyerl and Hans Joas, who emphasise creativity, change, and the need for new forms of social relations.
In addition, the project incorporates ideas from a rage of contemporary thinkers, including Naomi Klein, Bruno Latour, and Joan Martínez Alier, who advocate far-reaching transformations of the current economic and social model, such as new indicators of prosperity, a universal basic income, reduced consumption, and the prioritisation of local ecology.
Taken as a whole, Atlantis is a critical utopia that, prompted by the pandemic, reflects on the urgent need to rebuild society and to rethink the relationship between human beings, the economy, and nature.
